Abstract Meets Solid Form in Sedona, Arizona

Resident Manuscript

In late November Joe installed "Resident Manuscript" a 3' x 44' polychrome perforated steel screen at the exterior rear of the Davis Library. The intention of this project was to create a screen behind the rear windows of the Davis Library capable of reducing attention to vehicle or pedestrian traffic. To achieve this a perforated metal screen was used. The small holes in the screen allow light to pass through while simultaneously providing enough surface to paint reflective imagery capable of distracting attention from the outside area.

The screen material was shaped to resemble an ancient scroll. The images on this two-sided scroll refer to local nature, history, and scientific findings at UC Davis. The title refers to the fact that these subjects are regional or residents of the Davis area. Included are Pomo baskets, migrating White-faced Ibis and the Selasphorus Hummer, indigenous Sacramento Splitttail, native Valley Oak, rice crops, and the Purple Copper butterfly, a subject of global warming studies.

The Davis library featured performing artists at a recent event. A group of dancers utilized Joe's "Resident Manuscript" in their celebration of books.
